When TaylorMade launched their Burner Irons they knew they had a great club. The Burner 2.0 has made TaylorMade the number one selling iron company in golf. While that was great for a large segment of the golfing world, the Burner’s supercharged speed and distance didn’t always work for those who occupy the mid-to-low handicap ranks. Sure, TaylorMade has their Tour Preferred lines, but what’s the guy who shoots in the low 80′s to do?

TaylorMade hasn’t forgotten about you. Having recently launched their R11 Irons ($799+), which aren’t white (you didn’t seriously think they were white did you?), they’re a monumental leap forward for blending technology. Let’s explain further: by combining the speed and forgiveness of the Burner family and its predecessors with the precession shot shaping and accuracy technologies of the Tour Preferred lines, the R11 provides an amazing blend of traits that gets the salivary glands watering.

Anyone familiar with TaylorMade has undoubtedly heard of their Inverted Cone Technology, which provides faster ball speeds, especially on off-center hits. That paired with a Precession Weighting Port, moves the center of gravity away from the heel and more into the center of the club to give a uniform feel and performance across the set. The thing that really caught our eye though were the refined cast groves that TaylorMade touts are the best they have ever made. We have to agree — they’re a true blend of power and accuracy. Do you really want to sacrifice one for the other? Yeah, me neither.

We’ve played several rounds with the R11 Irons and they’ve found themselves a secure place in our bag for this season. While the top line is thinner than other irons in the good player/semi-game enhancement market (6-18ish handicap), ball compression is effortless so we hardly noticed. These clubs have some welcome heft to them, which for us, makes all the difference for a smooth feel and tempo. We have to commend TaylorMade for the use of specifically designed KBS shafts to round out a stellar set of irons. Distance irons and musclebacks have their place in the market, but for those of us in the middle do yourself and your game a favor and play the best of both worlds.

Compare TaylorMade R11 Irons With Burner 2.0 Irons

As a result of successful launch of the R11 Driver, the most recent R11 Irons have obtained significantly interest. In comparison to the Burner 2.0, the R11 share several similarities and differences using them.

The Taylormade R11 Irons feature a dual head design made for both performance and control. They have a shallow undercut channel between the face and rear to control feel and CG location, the mid-irons have a moderate undercut, and the long irons have a progressively larger undercut that pulls weight farther back from the face for added forgiveness. The irons also feature variable face thickness. Starting with 2.0mm thick face in the long irons to 2.3mm in the mid irons and 2.5mm in the short irons for enhanced feel.
Taylormade utilizes its inverted cone technology to expand the sweet area reducing overall loss on off center hits. The multifunctional sole is versatile and made to excel in any lie. The new R11 has traditional lofts with a 27.5* 5 iron and is considered between mid and compact size with less offset. The new grooves are USGA/R&A Conforming. An Optimized Inverted Cone that brings a larger COR area and improved control over your shot distance.

The TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Irons were engineered to deliver legendary Burner distance and more playability, and refinements to the Burner 2.0 vibration-management system improve sound and feel. Weighting is higher in short irons for more workability and gets progressively lower and more rearward in long irons for forgiveness. The sole design reduces drag and should increase playability.
Each of the eight iron shafts flexes in a slightly different area, or kick point. The long irons have a lower kick point to help players get shots higher; the short irons have a higher kick point to encourage a slightly lower trajectory; and the mid-irons’ kick point is in between. They are designed for those that are between a 5 and 25 handicap, so beginners are not suitable for the type.

The one-piece stainless steel cast heads boast a thin, lightweight face design like the Burner 2.0. The weight removed from the clubface has been shifted low and back to create a higher launch angle, faster ball speed, increased distance and more forgiveness. The result is comparable launch, ball flight and length to the Burner 2.0, as well as 15-yard distance gaps between clubs.
Besides, a light and lively face combines with inverted cone technology± to deliver more consistent ball speeds and forgiveness on mis-hits. At impact, the R11 feels and sounds more muted (quieter) than the loud-ish Burner 2.0 because the R11′s clubface is slightly thicker in the impact zone and where it connects to the sole.
